This week our class tried out another method for our online Chat – GroupMe. Below are the post-Chat questions and answers related to this topic.
Which method did you use and/or like best? Browser interface, App interface, or SMS Texting interface?
I was not able to use the App interface because my iPhone is antiquated. So, I ended up using the Browser interface, which I really like. I also tried out the SMS Texting interface – but finally had to turn off the SMS Texting feature – I don’t have unlimited texting, so this feature would exhaust my monthly allotment.
How do you think this method of chatting compares to others we’ve used in terms of benefits and disadvantages?
Of all the various methods we have tried thus far, I thought GroupMe was the best. There doesn’t seem to be a delay. The amount of people on the chat doesn’t seem to slow down post time. The capability of most to use the phone app feature. The ability to use SMS Texting if you want.
Can you see us using this means of communication for things other than assigned chats? When do you think it would be useful?
Sure, you could use it to chat with other students or with the instructor during off-chat times. Maybe in particular for group projects this might come in handy.
Did you hit any snags while installing and learning to use it? Any recommendations for folks thinking about using the App?
The only frustrating snag was the inability to get it to install on my iPhone, but that’s only because I’m behind the times. But the ability to have mobile capability would be nice so you aren’t tied to finding a computer to use the Browser interface.
